　ジョン・アイアランド「Spring Sorrow」

イギリスの音楽

　出口というのは、いつも何かしら小さなものであるらしい。

　ジョン・アイアランドの歌曲に「Spring Sorrow」というのがあって、ジュリアン・ロイド・ウェッバーがチェロで奏でている。原曲の歌詞はルパート・ブルック（Rupert Brooke, 1887-1915）というイギリスの詩人によるもの。原題は「Song」で、この詩が書かれた1912年というのは、ブルックにとって辛い時期であったようだ。今からちょうど100年前か。

All suddenly the wind comes soft,
　And Spring is here again;
And the hawthorn quickens with buds of green,
　And my heart with buds of pain.
　
My heart all Winter lay so numb,
　The earth so dead and frore,
That I never thought the Spring would come,
　Or my heart wake any more.
　
But Winter's broken and earth has woken,
　And the small birds cry again;
And the hawthorn hedge puts forth its buds,
　And my heart puts forth its pain.

　「Spring Sorrow」の楽譜はここにある。変イ長調という調性は、いつも何かを許してくれるような、そんな感じがする。何か、というのが何だかは、いつもよくわからないのだけれど。
